How Do Scientists Know a Peptide Is Really What the Label Says It Is?

A label tells researchers what a material is intended to be. Analytical testing provides evidence about whether the material is consistent with that identity.

Identity and Purity Are Different Questions

Mass spectrometry is one of the primary tools used to investigate peptide identity. It measures molecular mass, allowing a laboratory to compare the observed result with the expected molecular mass of the intended peptide.

HPLC answers a related but different question. Chromatography separates components in a sample and can help characterize purity, but a high-purity chromatographic peak by itself does not establish molecular identity.

Why Multiple Analytical Methods Matter

Depending on the peptide and the purpose of the analysis, laboratories may combine techniques such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, LC-MS, peptide mapping, amino-acid analysis, or other appropriate methods. Together, complementary analytical results can provide a stronger characterization of research material than a single measurement alone.

Those results also need to be connected to the material being evaluated through appropriate lot or batch documentation and traceability.

So when evaluating a peptide COA, remember: purity and identity are not the same thing. A purity percentage describes one aspect of the analytical result; identity testing asks whether the evidence is consistent with the molecule the material is represented to contain.
